Stress — “We need it”

After watching the ABC video link below, I got to thinking… Which is more important; Reducing Stress or Increasing Stress Hardiness.

With the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) equipment we have in the office we are able to measure stress, stress hardiness, “fight or flight” vs. ‘rest and digest” autonomic balance and fatigue. This has brought a new perspective on my opinion on stress. The only way to avoid stress is to crawl in a ball and die (and depending on your beliefs you may still have a wee bit of stress).

Stress is important in the growth of a human being. You grow physically to stress — exercise is a form of stress that improves the strength and increases the size of muscle. Stress on bone leads to calcium formation and increased bone strength. Studying is a form of stressing your brain to grow and increase brain function and learning.

So why can’t the normal everyday stress of life be looked at as a growth experience? It can as long as we don’t get on stress overload.

Stress hardiness is the body’s ability to handle stress — hence in a certain situation on person excels and another crumbles. We have shown in our office with doing the TFT22 – Craniospinal Technique we have been able to increase stress hardiness. Also good diet will also increase the stress hardiness. To me it seems like a much simpler approach to improve your body’s ability to handle stress than try to reduce your stress — many stressful situations are beyond our control — but our ability to handle them is within our control.

Many people are taking a pill to provide the illusion of stress hardiness — basically it just numbs the nervous system to ignore the situation or surroundings.

Call now for a FREE HRV Test to determine your stress hardiness and a complimentary consultation to determine if TFT22 – Craniospinal Technique might be the answer for you.

Fibromyalgia and the Gas Pedal

Many times you see the word “mystery” associated with Fibromyalgia. We have found in our office that fibromyalgia is not so mysterious.

Stay with me here for a moment — we will be talking neurology. The “Autonomic Nervous System” is the part of the nervous system that controls things automatically — You don’t have to think about it: Heart Rate, Digestion, Healing, Sleeping etc.

There are two parts to this system — sympathetic and parasympathetic (wow, you are using big words now). Stay with me for a few seconds longer. “Fight or Flight” and “Rest, Digest and Heal”, most of us have heard of these to systems explained that way.

We have found with our Heart Rate Variability equipment that most F.M.S. patients are stuck in “Fight or Flight” or stuck with the gas pedal pressed down. Generally it doesn’t seem as if they are running around like a chicken with its head cut off because:

1. In the fight or flight mode they do not sleep (tired)

2. In the fight or flight mode they do not digest (tired)

3. In the fight or flight mode they do not heal (sore)

4. In the fight or flight mode they use up valuable feel good chemicals (depressed)

5. In the fight or flight mode they are given un-natural chemicals to alleviate all of the above and mess up their system even more.

Chiropractic Cranial in many cases resets the balance between “fight or flight” and “rest, digest and heal”, thus allowing the brain to do what it is supposed to do.

Dr. Craig Ross will be appearing on KCRA 3( www.KCRA.com) on Tuesday October 7th at noon to discuss this tough condition. Go to Dr. Ross’ website www.Wellness22.com for more information on what he does and some special offers.

Chiropractic Cranial: A History of Results

I have been doing cranial work for approximately 5 years now. The more I think I know, the more I realize I don’t. I have been on a journey to find out why we get the incredible results with Chiropractic Cranial on conditions such as Migraines, Fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy and more.

I have put in thousands of hours of searching on the internet; and like the gold miners in 1849 just a half hour from where I live — I am starting to find the gold veins. I knew the name Nephi Cottam,D.C. a chiropractor from Utah that is credited with being the first chiropractor to regularly perform cranial adjustments — he called it “Craniopathy“.

I recently purchased an original copy of his son Calvin’s book, “Head First for Health” — published in 1952. In the book he recounts his father’s discovery of Craniopathy in the 1920′s. It is an interesting story which I will tell later.

If you or your family have been looking to restore your brain’s healing power, come talk to me about how this “old”, “hands on” procedure can put the body in position to repair itself.

Kind of like bringing an old building back up to code.

Radiation in All Forms is Bad!

WASHINGTON – The government will allow food producers to start zapping fresh spinach and iceberg lettuce with just enough radiation to kill E. coli and other dangerous germs, a key safety move amid increasing outbreaks from raw produce.

Although radiation is necessary in certain circumstances — twenty five years ago in chiropractic college we learned that all forms and all levels of radiation have a detrimental effect. It has been shown to alter genetic information. All food we eat has genetic information. Will we have a choice as consumers for non-radiated food.  I am sure there are safer ways to protect our food sources than radiation.

Maybe it won’t show in our generation, or our children, or their children, but altering genes in our food supply is bound to come back to haunt us.

This fits right in with the government mandating that our mattresses be coated in flame-retardant chemical. Well, myself and family are non-smokers — I should be able to buy a chemical free bed (non-smoker’s version).

The government in their wisdom of trying to protect us, is exposing us to lethal agents. What next — chemicals on diapers, so babies don’t get those nasty rashes — maybe mandate, everyone gets sprayed with Lysol before entering a grocery store.

Maybe the government should mandate, exercise, good diet and of course chiropractic cranial.

Take a Pill…or 20

JUST RELEASED – the top ten states for taking prescriptions:
pills

West Virginia is the highest at 17.2 prescriptions per year, PER PERSON. Followed by Missouri at 15.9; they also have the highest tobacco use and highest levels of arthritis. Next comes Tennessee at 15.8, along with the highest level of obesity and adult arthritis.

I was surprised that California came in at the second lowest at 7.4 per person (I still think that is way too high). Then again as stated before, for every one dollar spent on Alternative care, 40 dollars less are spent on pharmaceuticals — California has the highest number of alternative care practitioners.

We have seen in our office many patients reduce or eliminate many of their medication while under care with Chiropractic Cranial. While we NEVER recommend anyone stop or reduce their meds from a legal and ethical standpoint; when the body is working better it does not need outside chemicals.

As a friend and long-time fitness advocate Bob Delmontique used to tell me, “The brain is the greatest apothecary in the world”. That means that your brain can produce or make other parts of the body produce ANY chemical (natural drug) the body needs.

Here at Wellness 22, our goal is for your body to be working at optimum levels, from the top down, inside out!

We Don’t Take Insurance – Health Care by your rules!(not theirs)

Someone forwarded this YouTube link. I don’t know who put this together — but it will give you an idea why we don’t participate in insurance and it may give you a chuckle!

Take a look :) click here —> Health Insurance Rules

When a patient comes into our office — it is only a contract between the doctor and the patient. No paper pusher, or rule maker who is 400 miles away gets to decide your care for you.

Cranial Care is considered implausible by many insurance carriers – they just look at it as so “unbelievable” that they are not willing to pay.

Interesting statistic: If you think our care is too expensive, a study by the New England Journal of Medicine says, for every $1 spent on alternative care, $40 are NOT spent on pharmaceutical companies. So if you spent $1000 in our office, you just cost the pharmaceutical industry $40,000

Six Degrees of Separation (Kevin Bacon Game) The Brain Game

They just released a research study to prove that almost everyone in the world is separated by six degrees (really 6.2). This theory has been around for a long time (including the college trivia Kevin Bacon Game) — but they proved it with modern technology; text messaging.

This got me thinking about chiropractic cranial work. The brain controls everything in the body and communicates with all parts of the body. How many degrees of separation are your different organs?

I took my daughter to a chiropractor friend in San Francisco (Dr. Matt Colman) to have some special testing done on her. She has been suffering with a chronic cough. The pulmonary specialist said it was hypersensitive lungs from inflammation — possibly a bout of pneumonia. What we found out was that her left kidney was kind of at the bottom of the chronic inflammation.

Brain —> to Kidney —> to Lung — with some miscellaneous stops along the way. Each person’s body is just like the planet earth AND we are all connected. This is why the whole planet (body) needs to be looked at, rather than parts. However, 80 percent of the control is at the brain and branches out from there — Chiropractic Cranial addresses the master control.

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread

What do sliced bread and chiropractic have to do with each other?

In 1895 D.D. Palmer a magnetic healer developed/discovered chiropractic — an American born healthcare system!

In 1917 Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented the first loaf-at-a-time bread-slicing machine.

I have always loved the term, “The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread” and I love chiropractic and being a chiropractor. Otto and D.D. both came up with their “inventions” in Davenport, Iowa. Must be the Mecca of great ideas :)

Over the years there have been many variations of sliced bread as there have been many variations of chiropractic. Some of the techniques used in chiropractic did not originate with chiropractors AND some techniques developed by chiropractors have been used by other professions.

Just like bread, where some people like wheat and some people like sourdough; In chiropractic, some people like a physical style and some people gentle style. Chiropractic Cranial as done in our office is more along the lines of the gentle style — no cracking, popping or major twisting.

However, Dr. Ross has been in practice for 23 years and under the right circumstance, pop and twist with the best of ‘em — generally it is not necessary.

Pain and the Brain

Pain is good according to the Brain

As a chiropractor going on over two decades, I have seen many people in pain. They come to me for pain, they take a pill for pain, they have body parts rearranged because of pain. I have always told my patients that your brain sends the pain signals as a warning. I learned first hand (or head) yesterday about how the brain works.

I WENT TO THE DENTIST!  Although she is excellent, it was painful. She gave me the shots to numb my mouth painlessly — the drilling and filling was painless. So what’s my complaint. My brain did not warn me that I was chewing on my tongue and cheek. When the numbness was gone, my cheek and tongue were raw and swollen from ME :( .

When you take drugs to mask pain – you are just fooling the brain. You can continue to injure the painful area of the body.

Getting to the source of the pain is crucial. In many cases it is the brain and nervous system. Crainal work is about getting to the cause. However, if you are going to kick the dog or punch the door because of the pain — you still might want to take the pill first.

Then come in and get to the cause.

Chiropractors seek the cause and restore function so the body can repair itself.
